It’s a quick #QuestofFireFriday on the eve of All Hallows Eve. I thought today would be a fun day to share/reshare some sketches I’ve done of various beasts and characters of the Quest of Fire series. The series is filled with fresh takes on traditional monsters from werebeasts to goblins, some of which are offbeat or blends across cultures like the boggart and rusalka in Succession and Desperation respectively. Others are unique to Quest of Fire like the Sombra shadow assassins and the direnoir. The key thing about all of the monsters and all of the dark isn’t to play on fears or being scintillating for its own sake. I believe firmly that stories can shape us. In fact, I was asked at the WV Book Festival last Saturday what spiritual content the series has and one of the chief ways the spiritual content comes through is in the opportunity for the reader to face down monsters of fiction with characters displaying resilient faith as they do, to help readers then face the monsters of the real world with like resilient faith. My new favorite tagline for the whole series is, “The dark is gathering but the light is unending.” A nod to the first and last book’s titles and recalling, John 1:5:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Which is a wonderful thing to cling to as the days seem to both physically and spiritually darken. The True Light cannot be extinguished and those who follow Christ bear His light with us always, even to beyond death’s bounds. Which is the part of All Hallow’s Eve that we often forget. So, if you know someone who needs a rich, vibrant series where the light triumphs amidst great dark, Quest of Fire would be a fantastic fit.
Now, and evermore, may the Lord bless and be with you, lighting your way.
